Noted Local Artist and Craftsman to Exhibit Work at The Edward Hopper House

The controversial and moving artwork, developed by Frank Welles, will be featured at an upcoming show, July 5-27, 2003 at the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, NY. The show is expected to attract art enthusiasts from the New York City metropolitan area. Welles, who will be one of two artists exhibiting at this unique show, is known for his ability to marry elegant craftsmanship with intense and often controversial images.

For over four decades Welles has produced an eclectic range of artwork, from Figurative to Neo-Expressionist, to Semi-Abstract. He creates gouaches, etchings and oil paintings from his primary studio and gallery in Garnerville, NY. With his art, Welles intends to place the viewer in a participatory role rather than a static observer or critic. He strives to produce an "ever-lingering experience" through his highly emotive and powerful "interior landscapes."

Welles' distinctive treatment of space is evident in his three-dimensional framing of art within furniture, which he calls Enclosures Unlimited. In this vein, he created the Hendricke Bruegel Museum, which is on permanent exhibit adjacent to his gallery and studio in Garnerville. The exhibit includes furniture and paraphernalia that a fictional character, Hendricke, the imaginary brother of the Old Master Pieter Bruegel, may have used as a sideshow performer in medieval times.

The artist's ability to marry wood craftsmanship with startling images is evidenced in his profound triptych entitled "A Modern War…A Forgotten War" which was awarded 2002 Best In Show for New Works at Artspace in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Established as an international expert on wood finishing as an art form, Welles was dubbed The Leonardo of Floors by one of his clients, a world famous major motion picture star. He invented and owns the Sutherland Welles Ltd. label of polymerized tung oils, a high-end line of hand-rubbed finishes sold through Garrett Wade of New York.

Welles was also instrumental in organizing and developing the Garnerville Arts & Industrial Exchange (GAIE) in Garnerville, New York. A thriving collective of over 50 local artists and artisans who work in studios set up in a vintage industrial complex of 40 buildings, GAIE is planning its third Art Expo for June 2003.
